Aren’t we all looking for that magic bullet?! What is the single most important trick to weight loss? The one thing that will help us shed the pounds that we gained college, in our late 20’s when we went out with friends, during pregnancy, etc. And don’t you wish it were that simple? If we could just change one thing, and the pounds just fell off?? Well sign me up!!
The most important trick to weight loss – can you measure up?
It really can be that simple – just measure your food intake. And I mean – measure everything. Measure (and actually use measuring spoons and cups), count your snacks (how many chips or nuts makes a huge difference), and use a food scale. So many of us think we know what a 1/4 cup of almonds looks like, or 1 cup of that cereal we love in the morning – but have you really measured? Yes, you are choosing healthier options, but what are your portions?? Portion size is everything.
What constitutes a serving?
When my husband and I began our weight loss journey a couple of years ago (pre-baby, and for the wedding), this was one of our biggest learnings. Outside of choosing cleaner foods (which is so important), we never realized how much we overestimated a serving. If you’ve ever sit in front of the TV with a whole bag of chips or a box of crackers, you know how difficult it can be to stop at one serving. So don’t let yourself do it. Count out the serving and place it in a baggie or on a napkin before you leave the kitchen and leave the box or bag in the pantry. You will stick to a serving – I promise.
Measure up with these great tools
The other thing that we did – we invested in a few sets of measuring cups and spoons. Here’s one of our favorite sets – OXO Good Grips Stainless Steel Measuring Cups with Magnetic Snaps. Yes, our kitchen drawers are a bit cluttered, but we never go searching for the tablespoon measure because it’s in the dishwasher. We can always find one. This spoon, OXO Good Grips Stainless Steel Measuring Spoons with Magnetic Snaps, is especially handy, when it comes to my late night snack – a tablespoon of peanut butter on a slice of wheat toast. Believe me, until I started measuring out the peanut butter using a measuring spoon, I was overdoing it by a lot!
So order a couple of sets now, maybe on Amazon, or pick up a few sets from your grocery store next time you food shop – I promise it’s one of the best investments in your diet! Here are some of our other favorites…
