What do you eat before or after a big workout?

It’s a constant debate…what do you eat before or after a big workout?

I recently started incorporating spinning into my weekly routine, actually twice a week, to cross-train with my running. I have been frequenting a boutique studio, called Flow Cycle Studio, here in Richmond, Virginia. Spinning has been totally new to me, a completely different kind of workout, that offers a lot of intensity, but so different from running. What’s great about Flow is that the environment is friendly, welcoming, yet high intensity and offers a real challenge. The owners are friends, and they have done a fabulous job building the business in the last year. The classes are consistently packed even at 545am!

Spinning has been challenging, where you burn a lot of calories, and sweat a ton (at least I do)! At first, I opted for one of my go-to pre-workout, a slice of whole wheat toast topped with 1 tablespoon of natural peanut butter. Given that I was up at 5am trying to prepare my pre-workout snack, as the toaster oven was beeping loudly in the kitchen, I quickly realized that I needed to have a something prepared to grab as I headed out the door. I have always been a proponent of preparing my snacks on my own, I recently tried to master my own granola bar. Soft, moist and chewy, the Oatmeal Raisin Energy Bar is a great way to fuel up before a big workout! At just over 250 calories and high in carbs, it is perfect before spin class or before a run!

If you don’t have time to make your own, here are some of my favorite protein/energy bars to eat before or after a workout…

Clif makes excellent products, with no additives or preservatives. Their energy bars are a great alternative for the homemade option featured above, perfect to eat before a workout, as the high calories and carbs will help you fuel up!

Nature Valley Peanut Butter Dark Chocolate Protein Bars are one of my all-time favorites. The flavor is great, especially with the dark chocolate. At only 180 calories and 10g protein, these make an excellent choice to eat after a workout.

Wow! The entire line of Power Crunch bars are delicious, light, flaky and easy to digest. At only 200 calories, but loaded with protein, they are excellent to eat after a workout, or even as a snack. The Chocolate Mint is great for all of those who love their Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies, but don’t want the fat! Love!
